Our Story

Founded in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood, our company was born from a simple observation: California's electric grid cannot physically expand fast enough to meet our climate goals through electrification alone.

We saw an opportunity to create a solution that benefits both homeowners and the environment. By designing standardized, high-value home energy systems, we're making it possible for everyday Californians to participate in the clean energy revolution while earning exceptional returns on their investment.

Our Mission

Our mission is to accelerate the deployment of high performance, grid-connected battery systems across California. With each system we install and operate, we increase the grid's ability to balance supply and demand. Our goal is to contribute 1.0 Gigawatt of "grid balancing" battery resources by 2035. If we can meet our goal, we can substantially improve the pace of electrification of the world's 5th largest economy.

  • Steve Joseph

    CEO

Potrero Hill homeowner and engineer passionate about addressing climate change. I’ve been disappointed by how California has fallen from the undisputed global clean energy leader to a relative laggard. It's a deployment problem far more than it is a technology problem. I started Potrero Energy on the belief that if we can cut the cost of cost of residential energy systems in half, we should be able to open the floodgates to residential decarbonization. And both decarbonize our homes while also strengthening the grid, we'll be able to have an outsized impact on there would be a snowball effect of residential decarbonization leading to reduced emissions and grid balancing, and if doing so would open the floodgates to adoption. We need speed and. navigataddress the deployment problem. continued to innovate on climate technology, but not on major California utilities for continually raising rates, making it so hard for us all to justify electrifying our homes and businesses. I’ve also been disappointed by the California rooftop solar industry for being too inefficient, expensive and slow to adapt to change. I started Potrero Energy to bring California homeowners like myself a better path to decarbonization.
